Sec’y Clinton Hosts Officials From Latvia, Malaysia
State Dept. video of remarks by Secretary Clinton and President Valdis Zatlers of Latvia:
Clinton also met with the Foreign Minister of Malaysia and had some very pointed criticism of Myanmar’s [formerly 'Burma'] decision to charge pro-democracy activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, with new charges, largely considered baseless by human rights groups:
“Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday urged Myanmar to immediately release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, even as Malaysia’s foreign minister warned of isolating the military-run country.
Clinton, in tough language, told reporters at the U.S. State Department that she was deeply troubled by Myanmar’s decision to charge Suu Kyi for a baseless crime against the Nobel Peace laureate, who faces new charges less than two weeks before her house arrest was due to end…”
Democratic nations need to speak with a unified voice on this to put pressure on Myanmar to release Aung San Suu Kyi and I’m very pleased that Secretary Clinton has spoken out publicly and clearly denounced Myanmar’s actions.
