Lot going on in Washington. NSC is in full attendance they said this morning on the news. Afghanistan for one. They calling for more troops needed. Prayers for Madam Secretary and everyone today at the White House.
Just heard on Morning Joe, that Bill Clinton will be in meetings with the President reporting on his mission to Korea.
Thanks for the info! Hopefully there will be some good coverage of all of this!
maybe we’ll get some good photos of Hill & Obama
I’d rather have Hill and Bill
When will these two pose for some pics for us?!
I think their meetings are at different times. On politico I think Hillary meets later with the president. The last time I remember actually seeing photos of Hillary and bill together in one place was when she was sworn in as SOS.
Yeah, I saw that Bill Clinton will be meeting with the POTUS about N. Korea- would love to be a fly in the wall during that because it would probably be a fascinating discussion!
I don’t know how others feel but I think Afghanistan is a mess and I’m not sure how incrementally increasing troop numbers helps in a country where not even the Soviets, who were much more BRUTAL and willing to use any means necessary, ultimately had to leave Afghanistan in defeat. I just don’t know what the mission is anymore. Big thanks to George Bush for a job poorly done- after 9/11, instead of focusing on the real terrorists in Afghanistan, Somalia, etc. we went after Iraq’s oil at the expense of what our troops in Afghanistan needed to get the job done. Bush is a war criminal as far as I’m concerned.
According to the New York Times Bill is seeing the president at 4:00 p.m. and Hillary according to her schedule returns to the White House for a “Principals” meeting with the president at 5:15 p.m. Pretty sure their paths will cross.
Terry- it’s funny you mention that because at today’s daily press briefing, the press asked Ian Kelly why Hillary wasn’t going to be present when Bill Clinton briefed the POTUS (and I guess he’s also briefing the NSC in the situation room and usually the SOS would be there?). I’ll try to find out more if there’s anything available via the media. Someone like Laura Rozen over at foreignpolicy.com might have some info.
I heard that she was sending her top assistant in the state department who worked for Bill when he was president.
Let me look at the press briefing Jill because if I remember correctly, it mentioned her chief of staff, Cheryl Mills. Be right back!
Ok, here is the part of the State Dept. press briefing today on N. Korea:
************
…
QUESTION: A question on North Korea. President Clinton will be in the Situation Room later today to brief President Obama about his visit to North Korea. Why won’t the Secretary of State be there? It seems a bit unusual that she wouldn’t want to participate in that.
MR. KELLY: Yeah.
QUESTION: Or not that she wouldn’t want to, but that she isn’t.
MR. KELLY: Well, I – she has a previous – she’s got a conflict, this meeting that we discussed, this meeting with the Colombian foreign minister. She is going to send a person that she thinks is appropriate to participate in this meeting. This is her Counselor and Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills. But it’s simply a matter of trying to juggle schedules.
QUESTION: Can you explain what Cheryl Mills – what her role was in Bill Clinton’s mission?
MR. KELLY: Ms. Mills was the Secretary’s point person in dealing with the issue of Ms. Lee and Ms. Ling and their detention in North Korea. So she was the person who coordinated our efforts.
QUESTION: And what – I don’t know how much you know about how much she’s been briefed by her husband about the visit, but can you tell us anything about that?
MR. KELLY: Well, I have no doubt that he did share his impressions with her, but you know it’s our longstanding policy not to discuss the substance of conversations between the Secretary and either of the two presidents she deals with – one former, one present.
Yes.

Here’s more of the same on why Hill and Bill won’t be together with POTUS. I honestly don’t see what the big deal is but the media seem to be harping on it:
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/08/18/2034242.aspx
Not sure why Hillary wasn’t there except for the Columbian minister conflict. Not sure it means anything
There is a story about this in the NYTimes with a Jeff Zeleny’s biline.

Read the comments. Carolyn (Rodham) comment # 3 could be you Stacy.
Terry- as you probably know I think bill’s mtg with Obama is certainly newsworthy but as you probably also know, the bit about the media trying to read too much into Hillary not being at that mtg with the past & present POTUS is annoying.
And OMG- you are so right about comment #3 to the article- it *does* sound just like me- I started cracking up as I read it- I even use the word “claptrap” rather frequently and I NEVER hear anyone use that term! I swear I’ve read that persons comments before on pro-Hillary sites like Madame Secretary because the name “Carolyn Rodham” is familiar to me!
I often read her comments on the nytimes during the primaries. She was a staunch Hillary supporter, right through the final moments in June, but finally moved over to Obama a couple of months later. How can you lure her over here to join us in our discussions?
How can I? LOL. I think it should be a group project! I want to see if she also comments on Madame Secretary. Or throw a link down in that NYT comments section to see if it lures her over.
