World Humanitarian Day

August 19, 2009

Thailand ASEAN ClintonSecretary Clinton issued the following statement this morning in commemoration of World Humanitarian Day:

Today, the United States is honored to join the international community in commemorating the first World Humanitarian Day.  Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 to increase public awareness about humanitarian activities around the world, World Humanitarian Day is also an occasion to honor aid workers who labor every day on behalf of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.  This day marks the sixth anniversary of the Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad in which 22 people were killed, including Sergio Vieiro de Mello, the Secretary General’s Special Representative in Iraq.

Sadly, situations of dire need exist in every region of the world.  The success of our collective response to humanitarian crises rests on the selfless commitment and dedication of professional humanitarian aid workers.  Increasingly however, aid workers themselves are targets of attack – in 2008 alone a record 260 humanitarian aid workers were killed, kidnapped or seriously injured in violent attacks.  We call upon all governments and parties in conflict to give their highest attention to the safety and security of humanitarian personnel. We are inspired by these workers’ personal dedication to humanitarian principles, especially in the face of grave danger.  We honor their service, and we congratulate their successes.

Wow! From AP, Bill and Hill are scheduled to arrive in Bermuda today for a three or a four day vacation. How awesome is that?

    Bermuda? Lucky them.

I thought they’d be in MV though. I guess there’s still time to hop over there after a few day in the sun and sand. We’ll see I guess. And if Stacy knows something I bet she won’t say given she’s said on this blog that unless its political in nature, family stuff is family stuff and should only get a passing mention bc of privacy concerns. Am I right Stace?

Steve- you are right in that if it’s personal Clinton family stuff that is not or should not be newsworthy b/c of the privacy aspecct, I try to avoid it so as to not play a role in fanning the flames. I might give passing mention to something that is possibly newsworthy – for example, if it turned out Chelsea got married this weekend I would probably put up a post saying essentially “congrats” to her and her family and that is about it. Speaking of which, PYW tossed me this link which *might* put the rumors to rest about a possible wedding this weekend:

So, in keeping with my promise to not “fan the flames” I’ll take Bill Clinton’s spokesperson at his word and that’s all I’m gonna say on that issue…
