Clinton Global Initiative Begins

September 22, 2009

Former President Bill Clinton’s annual summit in New York of world leaders, celebrities, business executives, activists and scholars has gotten under way.

The Clinton Global Initiative seeks solutions to the world’s most pressing issues, like climate change and poverty. But it’s taking place under the cloud of another massive problem — a global economic downturn.

Attendees at the conference are expected to make concrete commitments on steps they will take to work on global issues. Billions of dollars have been committed in previous years.

Organizers say they expect to have the same number of commitments this year, but that the dollar value of those commitments are likely to be lower.

Expected speakers include President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

According to the CGI website:

The closing plenary will highlight progress achieved over the past five years, showcase the accomplishments of the 2009 Annual Meeting, and inspire attendees to continue their work via Commitments to Action in the year ahead with a keynote address from Hillary R. Clinton, United States Secretary of State, and closing remarks from President Clinton.
