Scooter-Files

November 13, 2009

Well, Scooter has now been part of the family for about three weeks and she’s slowly being integrated into domestic cat society and while the transition from stray cat to indoor love-muffin hasn’t been totally smooth, things are going ok.

I should have named her “Crash” because that’s the noise most readily associated with her. Yesterday while I was in the shower she broke two potted plants and then later in the day almost managed to get a third but that effort failed. Actually, she’s slowly learning things like: window sills don’t make great perches when the window is closed, playing in the sink isn’t a great idea when there are dirty dishes in there, if you try to attack birds through a screened-in window your claws will get hopelessly stuck and you’ll look silly, etc.

Here are some photos from last weekend:

Scoot

Yes, she looks innocent enough but when I am home she doesn’t let me sit still for one minute. She also has an aversion to sleeping during the day, which I am not used to since that’s all my other cat, Notch, does. Here’s a photo demonstrating the above-mentioned screen issue:

And this photo was taken during the 3 seconds that she was actually sitting still. It never happened again:

My 15 year-old cat, “Notch”, isn’t all too thrilled with the non-rent-paying house guest but things are going ok. I think she just wishes Scooter would stop acting like she’s crazed and let her go back to her 20-hour a day sleep routine, which has been interrupted by Scooter’s not sitting still for one minute, ever and wanting to play with anything not nailed down, including Notch. I can’t really leave them alone together because every once in a while little cat fights break out, but we’re getting there. We have frequent “time outs.”

I love your stories…I know what you mean about leaving the wild one alone with the 15 year old. I have 3 1/2 year old twins that we had to keep seperated from our 15 year old too. When you get tired of playing referee, having a crate saves your sanity. Just a thought. They are both so adorable, by the way.

HA! It will take time. The fact that you have them interacting at this early stage without too much in the way of fighting is a good sign. Is the younger cat “fixed” because if not, that could account for her extra-craziness.
