January 26, 2010
Secretary Clinton is really amazing in a town hall setting- it really compliments her speaking style and ability to interact with people in a very real human way. This is a great video.

I wonder how things might have played out differently if Paul Farmer (Hillary’s choice) were running USAID.
Secretary Clinton’s ability to interact and to answer unscripted questions is underrated. I recall after Obama’s press conference when he sided against the police concerning the Henry Louis Gates incident, he didn’t hold another press conference for months. I’m honestly not sure if he has held one still since then.
It is very hard to hold these kind of meetings and not create unfortunate sound bytes. You can’t just speak in vague generalities and there is no script to hide behind.
I viewed the town hall, and I agree that Hillary’s depth, intelligence and basic humanity comes through (whether it be cracking jokes, making faces or talking about issues close to her heart) in such a setting. The United States lost a lot when she did not get the nomination.
Regarding Haiti, this opinion piece from the European side of the world compares the EU High Representative to Hillary’s performance: “EU diplomat fails test in Haiti” (http://balticreports.com/?p=8770).
