USAID Vacancy

August 5, 2009

The WaPo has an article today that would seem to imply that the continued vacancy for USAID Director means President Obama and Secretary Clinton are not interested in the development and aid side of diplomacy/foreign policy. Given that Secretary Clinton expressed frustration at the long, arduous vetting process for the USAID position during her town hall meeting at USAID prior to leaving for India, and it sounded to me like any real hold-up was from the White House end of things. I don’t think there is anything to suggest that Hillary Clinton is not fully invested in USAID.

That said, I can totally understand the frustration that USAID employees must be feeling given that 7 months into a new administration, their agency still has no director.

I have blogged about the possibility of Dr. Paul Farmer being selected to be USAID Director, here, here and here. I personally think he would be a wonderful choice and if he can’t get through the vetting process, then I can’t help but think no one can!

Just heard Hillary will be on Fareek Zakaria’s GPS for the entire hour on Sunday.

Cool, thanks Terry. I love Zakaria’s show!

From the tweets I am seeing, it sounds like it’s pre-recorded and maybe even today? I can’t find anything on Zakaria’s site saying he’s interviewing her or I’d post it (not that I don’t believe you, I just wish he’d have it on his homepage)
