Great pictures, as always. Scooter is cute in her tube and I love the picture of Notch. The way the sun is coming in and lighting some parts of her face and body is cool.

I just ran across this article over on Technorati and I’m throwing the link in this thread for lack of a better place to put it. I could have created a post for it but quite frankly, the whole McChrystal incident and the speculation about what Hillary thought, said, did, etc. tires me out. But I like Emptywheel, she has an eye for detail and she put up this post about how Rahm Emanuel left Hillary out of the list of people that played a big role in advising the POTUS regarding what to do about McChrystal:

    http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2010/06/23/what-did-hillary-think-abou-mcchrystals-firing/

Emptywheel admits it’s reading tea leaves at this point, but one thing McChrystal did that pisses me off is he seems to have created at least the appearance of internal divisions in the WH. Of course the media loves this stuff. I try to remind myself that the reality is that not everyone involved in foreign policy/national security in the admin. is going to agree all the time and just because Gates or Hillary or Jones or whomever disagree with this or that, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are at each other’s throats. And of course, with something as serious as war, it would probably not be a good thing if every single member of the team had just one viewpoint.

Interesting catch. I believe Marcy is another lawyer, so she too attends closely to detail, and analyzes well.

As Emptywheel suggests, “[Hillary’s] involvement didn’t serve the overall narrative”. Precisely because she received the only praise from McChrystal’s team, her role in firing him had to be minimized to make Obama look more like a Commander in Chief.

Yeah, that may make the most sense. No doubt it’s awkward all around. McChrystal really made a mess of things.

In a strange way, the Rolling Stone reporter did everyone a favor because this certainly wasn’t the first time McChrystal had stepped way out of line and who knows what else he would have done and said if this article hadn’t appeared. It’s pretty clear that while championing COIN he wasn’t really using it- Maddow said it best and I’m paraphrasing- but you can’t be the guy promoting COIN and the civilian-military effort while at the same time being the guy who is trashing the civilians and diplomats who you are supposed to be working with. There was a good article in the WaPo about how endless wars that go on for a long time can play a role in creating an environment for this sort of attitude among the military.

    Great photos, thanks again!

As for the emptywheel link- We’ll probably never know what Hillary thinks about all this and it’s all guessing at this point. I do agree with you that this whole McChrystal mess has revived the whole idea of serious divisions in the WH even if it may in fact not be true. One thing worries me though, if Hillary was 100% behind McChrystal I wonder what she thinks at this point as it becomes more clear each day that he was essentially talking the talk but not walking the walk (about civilian-military cooperation as a central aspect of COIN). At the end of the day, McChrystal over-promised and under-delivered (just like his boss, Obama often does). Things in Afghanistan appear to be worse and I am not sure how the administration can believe that COIN will be effective when the Karzai government is totally corrupt and may even be playing both sides? Today Panetta told us what most of us already know- there’s hardly any AQ in Afghanistan despite Obama and all the other members of the admin. claiming the place is just CRAWLING with them. I guess at this point, I have to wonder about the judgment of the people who had total blind faith in McChrystal and this war strategy and its none too reassuring that the same people who support every military action, never seem to learn from their mistakes. I’m pretty damn sure that this time next year we may have attacked Iran and it will be the same hawks pushing for that ill-fated policy too (cheered on by our special friend Israel of course).

This may not be true because these rumors of US warship amassing close to Iran have been bubbling under the surface for weeks, but who knows?

    You are welcome!

I was kind of bummed because I really couldn’t find too many new photos that I thought people wouldn’t have seen. I stay clear of daylife for most of these photo bombs because everyone sees all the Hillary photos there.

I was psyched about the blue dress photos because I hadn’t seen those particular ones at that Irish gala.

She can pull off an Oscar de la Renta like nobody’s business! I think she’s been using him since way back during her WH days. Hey, when something works, stick with it.
