SOS Hillary Clinton’s Tuesday Appointment Schedule

July 6, 2010

It’s all about Israel today.

7:45 a.m. Secretary Clinton calls Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

9:30 a.m. Secretary Clinton meets with Senator George Mitchell, Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, at the Department of State.
(CLOSED PRESS COVERAGE)

11:30 a.m. Secretary Clinton calls Quartet Representative Tony Blair.

12:30 p.m. Secretary Clinton attends President Obama’s bilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at the White House.

3:30 p.m. Secretary Clinton attends a meeting with President Obama, at the White House.

4:45 p.m. Secretary Clinton holds a bilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at Blair House.

Everything I have seen and read about this Netanyahu visit indicates that it will be an opportunity to not only discuss the myriad of issues impacting both countries, but it will be used to reassure nervous members of Congress (ie. Democrats) that the US-Israeli “special relationship” is still, in fact, special. In other words, don’t expect anything but smiling photo ops and constant reassurances that the U.S. “is totally committed to Israel’s security” and that the “bond between the US and Israel in unshakeable” etc. etc.

One of the big questions is whether the Mayor of Jerusalem will take this opportunity to pull one of his usual stunts and announce an expansion of illegal settlements in East Jerusalem. Many in the Israeli media are betting that he will do just that in an attempt to undermine direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Stay tuned.

I read elsewhere on the internet that a Frank Luntz poll commissioned by a pro-Israel organization in the US found that a large majority of Americans do NOT support the Israeli raid on the aid flotilla. That is interesting considering the aggressive coverage put out by the US mainstream media to defend the raid.

Perhaps Israel’s government will realize it is not enough to have the avid support of Congresspersons, when you do not have the support of the American people?

@SA- yes, I saw that. I actually posted that poll over on TaylorMarsh.com.

The results are interesting but as far as I’m concerned, not that surprising. I think most Americans, irrespective of what they thought of the motives or wisdom of the flotilla organizers, understand that when a nation with one of the most powerful military’s on earth attacks a boat in international waters as though it’s attacking a hostile army armed to the teeth, “get” that there is something very wrong with that. We all understand that every democratic nation has a police force and military that knows how to deal with basic civil disobedience and that to use the most violent means to stop them, usually backfires. Badly.

Israel did such an incompetent job with their PR I can’t imagine what they were thinking- I mean come on, doctoring a sound recording to make it sound like the activists are growling things like “go back to Auchwitz” only to have to be embarrassed later when its quite easily found to have been doctored by the ISRAELI GOVERNMENT- they added that to the recording to try to further malign the activists. What were they thinking? We just don’t expect civilized democracies to respond that way and when they do, it begs the question, “why are you so afraid of the truth that you have to doctor evidence?” Never mind the cynical use of the Holocaust as a PR stunt.

Hi there. I’m delurking. Love this site and love the fact that you guys talk issues instead of just acting like a fan club.

Just watched an MSNBC clip- I can’t find the video yet and I wanted to twitter in to them because it was outrageous- they brought in someone to talk about US policy towards Israel and what is their idea of comprehensive coverage? they bring in a NY Rabbi who predictably says the US is being unfair to Israel and no, the settlements in E. Jerusalem shouldn’t stop. I kept waiting for some other person to be called in to talk about the other side of the issue but nope, that was it. And yet, all the wingers bemoan the fact that the US media is so anti-Israel- what planet are they on?

When was the last time you saw a palestinian on tv being interviewed? I think Amanpour and Zakaria would interview Abbas when he was in town, but that’s about it. It’s like they can’t find any Americans of Palestinian descent or any leaders of pro-Palestinian groups? Please.

They’ve spent so much time painting those who support Palestine/disagree with Israeli policies even a little bit as nuts, religious extremists, anti-Semites, or otherwise “fringe” elements of society that to interview one fairly would be undermining their own work not to mention that they too might end up lumped in with the others who have been labeled “anti-Israel”.

Oh yeah, the US media is sooooooo anti-Israel.

Take a look at this picture:

    http://www.thiscantbehappening.net/node/98

It’s of a Palestinian woman trying help the American artist who was shot in the face by the IDF the DAY AFTER the flotilla raid. You didn’t see this picture anywhere, nor did you read about her story. Nor did Secretary Clinton speak to the tragedy.

Apparently Secretary Clinton only cares about American citizens killed or attacked abroad if its convenient to their policy of whitewashing every think Israel says and does.

Ask Rachel Corries parents how helpful Secretary Clinton, or any other Secretary of State, has been in finding justice for their dead daughter, killed by the IDF.

How many Israelis does the US kill in a given year? Ummmm….none. And yet its the US that has to prove every three minutes that we are loyal to Israel?

Now that’s just nuts. A childish way to build a story where there isn’t one.

We’ve taken paranoia to a new level and are sounding like 1930’s Germany with all our talk of “infiltrators”:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/apr/11/israeli-groups-attack

Israel is a thousand times worse than when I last visited here. It’s a military/religious state which has become as warped as the enemy it says its fighting.

Good article from Weiss about how most American Jews don’t even know the history of the Nakba and unless you know this, you can’t possibly understand why the Palestinians are so miffed.
