Secretary Clinton Answers Southeast Asian Youth’s Questions via Video

July 23, 2010

This is a great video.

I know some of the beltway bubble insiders like Aaron David Miller, Leslie Gelb etc. are constantly bemoaning the fact that Hillary Clinton isn’t James Baker or Henry Kissinger (I say THANK God she’s not!), but when I see her outreach efforts I think some of the critics have it all wrong. Would Baker, Kissinger or even Rice have done something like this? No. Should they have. Yes, I think so. Props to Secretary Clinton for her outreach efforts.

There is more to diplomacy than having the U.S. point our finger in everyone else’s face and telling them how we want them to live and govern. After eight years of cowboy diplomacy which did little more than make most of the world hate us, thus further jeopardizing our short and long-term security, it’s reassuring that Secretary Clinton understands that interacting with average folks across the globe does more to engender cross-cultural understanding and improve global relations with the U.S. than dropping bombs and threatening people ever will. Some righties have claimed that this administration is wrong to admit past mistakes and to speak honestly about our own struggles (for example balancing civil liberties vs. security in the war on terror), but that is nonsense. Eight years of testosterone-fueled foreign policy which made no effort at using “soft power” did little other than sow the seeds of resentment, particularly in the Muslim world. And we are still paying the price.

Thank you so much for posting this! I didn’t see it on YouTube when I looked earlier for recent videos of her trip.

You are so right about her diplomacy. I think the boys club feels threatened by her attempts to reach out to people they wouldn’t feel comfortable reaching out to. They don’t even realize their own bias.

Hey, thanks for this- she certainly is good at connecting with all kinds of people. She makes an extra effort in a way Condi Rice never did.

Stacy- just got back from Israel btw.

    Have a good Friday everyone!

Nice post. I believe Kissinger and Baker operated diplomatically in a “different world” than Clinton has to face. Actions such as the preemptive invasion of Iraq and its buildup, the mismanagement of Iraq, Guantanamo, etc., have altered global opinions toward the US. And these things don’t fade away quickly, especially considering we are still at war in Afghanistan, Iraq is not settled, and the Israeli-Palestinian situation is as unresolved as ever…

Just ran across this story about Clinton and China. Seems like China is always in a snit about something.

China’s a pain in the ass. And yes, they ARE always in a snit about something and they should largely be ignored. China wants to dominate that whole region.

I swear, they are a huge national security threat but because they are our banker, we’re kissing their back side.
