TGIF: SOS Hillary Clinton’s Daily Appointments

September 3, 2010

9:15 a.m. Secretary Clinton conducts a joint interview with Israeli Channel 2 and Palestine TV, at the Department of State.

I’ll keep an eye out for that video and will post it if and when it’s available.

I saw this article by MJ Rosenberg and thought it was interesting- it points out that one of the main obstacles in Mideast peace is the fact that Congress won’t let Obama apply any pressure to Netanyahu despite the fact that Israel holds all the cards (militarily, territory, special relationship with US):

I never thought of it this way but one of the biggest obstacles is our own US Congress and many of the pro-Israel hardliners. Congress doesn’t want Jerusalem divided and thinks that illegal settlements shouldn’t be stopped. How in the hell can Obama and Secy Clinton work with that?

Rosenberg is right. It’s sad but true- Netanyahu has more support among some members of Congress than the President of the U.S. does. Why in the world the Lobby is so powerful is beyond me. Whenever anyone tries to break the dangerous status quo in that part of the world, the Lobby and the Jewish community go nuts and defend Israel no matter what. It would be one thing if Israel as a country was safer and better off b/c of the Occupation. But it’s not. That’s why such knee-jerk loyalty/support makes NO sense.

If your friends can’t tell you when you’re f*cking up, then who will? And that’s where we are with Israel.
