Secretary Clinton & Bibi Netanyahu *updated*

November 11, 2010

I don’t have any transcripts or videos yet, but it was all smiles prior to their meeting this morning.

Everything I am reading is essentially saying that Bibi is upping the ante with the latest announcement of E. Jerusalem settlements because he feels emboldened by the Republican takeover of the House. Despite claims to the contrary, the settlement announcement, in addition to the Fox News interview last week where Bibi called on the US to, in effect, seriously consider using a military option with Iran, is a result of Bibi’s renewed confidence that he can do and say anything he pleases without any repercussion or consequences. And he’s right! What are the Democrats doing to reign in this thankless, inappropriate behavior and support their President and Secretary of State’s efforts to ensure Israel’s long-term security through a Mideast peace deal? NADA! As Bibi was caught on [a recently-surfaced] video tape saying in the 1990’s “America is a thing that is easily controlled…”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Hillary Clinton and Bibi Netanyahu Talk Peace, posted with vodpod

UPDATE: Here is the transcript. Basically, they didn’t talk to the press although it sounds like that very first question was planted because it just repeats verbatim what Bibi said all yesterday. That said, I wish I had been there to answer that question because I’d LOVE to get that debate going!:

QUESTION: Madam Secretary, can I ask you a small question (inaudible)?

SECRETARY CLINTON: A small question? (Laughter.)

QUESTION: A little one.

QUESTION: Why would you – why do you think the building in Jerusalem is counterproductive if it has been going on for more than 40 years now?

SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, we’re going to be talking about everything and I will save my comments beyond what I’ve already said to talk to the prime minister. I’m very pleased to be here and to have this opportunity to discuss with him how we’re going to move forward in the process.

PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU: Well, I’m very happy that we have the opportunity to actually meet. We’ve been talking on the phone quite intensively over the last few weeks. The last time we met was in Cairo and Jerusalem – in Sharm el-Sheikh and Jerusalem in the (inaudible) of direct negotiations. We’ve been talking and will talk today about how to resume them to continue this process to get the historic agreement with peace and security between us and the Palestinians. I would like to add that we also hope to broaden it to many other Arab countries. So this is our common goal. We’re quite serious about doing it and we want to get on with it, so you’ll have to stop asking questions.

QUESTION: (Inaudible) the resumption of the peace talks soon?

SECRETARY CLINTON: That’s what we’re going to be discussing. We’re both very committed to it. I know and I’ve said repeatedly that the prime minister and President Abbas are both very committed to the two-state solution and we’re going to find a way forward.

QUESTION: Is there a formula? Is there a formula (inaudible)?

SECRETARY CLINTON: You must have a million pictures of us doing the handshake. (Laughter.)

QUESTION: Is there a formula that (inaudible)?

SECRETARY CLINTON: Thank you all very much.

Look at Bibi grinning like the cat that swallowed the canary! He has been rooting for the defeat of Obama and the dems for months! He’s halfway there!

I’m sure the Israel Lobby and the Democrats will step up to the plate and eagerly support the President and Secretary Clinton in their efforts! As we speak I bet the NYT editorial desk is just overrun with editorials from Chuck Schumer, Henry Waxman, Barbara Boxer, Joe Lieberman, Abe Foxman and others calling on Bibi to halt settlement construction in occupied E. Jerusalem and work with our POTUS in an effort to restart negotiations, particularly after the US made a not-so-secret offer to Israel offering them all kinds of extra economic, diplomatic, military aid and promises that go on…forever! All in exchange for a crummy 2 month extension on the “moratorium.” Oh wait, but Israel said “f*ck you, no, we want, we want, we want, more, more, more, more, more…”

The truth is getting out and the apologists are getting frantic:

Watch the video if you want to know what actually goes on.

      That’s a really incredible video.

It’s really a shame that to get actual information on the conflict, you have to go anywhere else BUT the MSM. Although in fairness to the NYT, according to that article Robert Mackey of the NYT has criticized his coworkers for how they cover Mideast peace.

Bibi looks really happy, as others are noting. Many weeks ago, I looked at his face in the pics Stacy posted here during the “peace” talks. He never looked remotely as happy as he does here…

I got in another argument with the parents last night about this. As far as they are concerned its all the Palestinians fault- they basically repeated every media and Israeli talking point on the subject. *sigh*

I really hope that the administration doesn’t take Bibi’s bait and offer up all kinds of deals in return for nothing other than a two week moratorium which doesn’t even include E. Jerusalem!

I’m afraid Steve is right. Israel is clearly holding out so they can get more promises, economic aid etc. from the US. Isn’t that extortion?

From a Haaretz article about the Clinton-Netanyahu mtg:

Israeli officials say Netanyahu intends to discuss with Clinton the need for forging broad U.S.-Israeli understandings on Israel’s security needs in any eventual peace agreement in light of enormous security challenges expected in the coming decade.

“The chances of reaching a peace agreement will be improved significantly by achieving comprehensive security understandings between Israel and the United States,” Netanyahu said.

Israel wants a long-term military presence in the Jordan Valley along the eastern border of a future Palestinian state as well as financial help to pay for security arrangements that would be necessary if a peace deal is achieved.

So I guess we’ll have to pay for Israel’s “security arrangements?” What the heck? We are giving them 30 billion dollars already! The bit about a long term military presence in the Jordan Valley is a poison pill that will enrage the Arab world- I am sure Hillary and Obama know that, but still.

Bibi really does have gigantic balls, doesn’t he?
