Heard Around the Hillary-Sphere: Post-Thanksgiving Link Dump & Random Things
I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and for those of you who went shopping today, Black Friday, I say this: you are certifiable.
~~Secretary Clinton has been working behind the scenes to diffuse the escalating tensions between North and South Korea. Thus far, the Paranoid Kingdom, aka North Korea, is not backing down and China, as usual, is refusing to use its considerable leverage over N. Korea to reign in Kim Jong Il.
~Speaking of which on Wednesday of last week Secretary Clinton met with Stanford University professor Dr. Siegfried Hecker to discuss his trip to North Korea to see Kim Jong Il’s fancy new uranium enrichment facility. And the neocons want us to believe Iran is the worst threat on the planet right now? All I can say is that North Korea is very lucky that it isn’t in closer proximity to Israel because if it was, there probably would have been an emergency session of Congress today.
~Secretary of State Clinton will apparently be heading to Kazakhstan on December 1st and 2nd for the meeting of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation. This is in addition to her scheduled trip to Bahrain, also in December.
~The State Department is warning it’s allies that WikiLeaks is preparing for another document dump and this one is expected to be the largest yet. They will include diplomatic cables between the US and our allies and some are saying that they could embarrass all involved as they could potentially reveal the US having taken part in actions that are contrary to what we were claiming in public. For example, according to the Washington Post “The documents reportedly suggest that the U.S. has supported the PKK, which has been waging a separatist war against Turkey since 1984 and has been classified by the State Department as a terrorist organization since 1979…” Not good. Haaretz is reporting today that confidential communique’s between the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv and the Israeli government could be among the documents revealed and they could potentially be embarrassing for all involved.
~Dick Morris is still a dick.
~While the government is trying to convince us that things in Afghanistan are improving, this story was a huge set back and embarrassment for both the Karzai government and quite frankly, the U.S. government.
~Have you ever seen a baby bat?
~The world is watching to see whether the U.S. and Europe put meaningful pressure on Egypt to ensure full and fair parliamentary elections on November 28. Many believe the U.S. response (or lack thereof) is a test of whether the U.S. is truly committed to democracy and human rights abroad. This is all the more important as Egypt will be having Presidential elections next year.
~Disturbing statistic of the day- one in three South African men admit to having committed rape.
~Salon has a list of the 30 worst hacks in political punditry and I have to say, I largely agree with their assessment. Here’s just a few of the names: Halperin, Cohen, MoDo, Goldberg, Peretz and Broder. The commentary is actually quite funny as you read through them.
~I feel compelled to mention that the New England Patriots were SUPERB yesterday as they beat Detroit. So all you haters out there, and you know who you are…silencio!
