Holiday Secretary of State Sighting
Most have probably seen this by now but I have a few free moment to blog, so this from the NYT:
Seems that the Clintons — that’s the former president, Bill; the current secretary of state, Hillary; and this summer’s Bride of the Century, Chelsea — stopped by the Café Carlyle on Thursday night. They were there to toast Steve Tyrell, the singer who took over when Bobby Short died in 2005.
“We came at 8, and they were already sitting down,” said the tipster, Neil Leifer, a filmmaker and former Sports Illustrated photographer who knows Mr. Tyrell from their evenings together at Elaine’s, the famed Upper East Side watering hole. “There was a lot of Secret Service.”
The 8:30 p.m. show was delayed a bit, Mr. Leifer reported, because Mr. Clinton had gone to the restroom and then chatted up some people at the bar on the way back. The Clintons stayed for the whole show, which ended about 10:30 p.m., and then for about half an hour afterward, posing for pictures with Mr. Tyrell, Mr. Leifer and others (Mr. Clinton stayed 15 minutes longer than his wife and daughter, Mr. Leifer said.)
“He was singing throughout the show,” Mr. Leifer said of the former President. “He was mouthing the words, you could see it from where I was sitting.”
To introduce “The Way You Look Tonight,” Mr. Tyrell told the story of how the younger Ms. Clinton had chosen it for the father-daughter dance at her wedding. “She got up, and I remember thinking, ‘What a strange time for her to go to the ladies’ room,’ ” Mr. Leifer said of Chelsea. “But she went over to sit with her dad. I can’t remember whether she put her arm around him, or he put an arm around her. It was quite a touching moment, actually.”
I hope everyone is having a restful holiday.
