Would you believe the Bahraini forces are now attacking protesters INSIDE hospitals and at funerals? Nick Kristof and others reporting. He also reported brutal attacks on healthcare workers.

I do not blame our Administration for having an inherited relationship with the Bahraini ruler. But this is brutality beyond the pale of civilization. We have a fleet stationed there, and I am sure the Bahraini ruler benefits financially for hosting us.

Obama ought to seriously respond. As should the EU, the UN, Red Cross, … I’m aware of the hatred and oppression against the Shi’ite on the Arabian Peninsula, but this is incredible.

Look, Bibi’s blown his dog whistle and his little congressional army has all come to his aid, lashing out at the administration for daring to advocate US policy:

The Obama administration should abstain from the vote to send a clear message that our policy on settlement stands. But no, at the last minute they offer a weak “presidential statement” that isn’t binding and doesn’t call the settlements illegal. It’s called having no spine.

I wish all these people would get voted out of office, but they won’t. Because, well, you know why. Lets just make Israel our 51st state so that way maybe we’ll actually get something in return- taxes. Then maybe we can get some new voices in Congress that actually don’t go all tribal and instead actually represent the UNITED STATES.

It”s a total embarrassment for the U.S.- to be so whipped by Israel that we can’t even enforce our own policies (and international law) relating to Israel at the UN is a disgrace.

The way congress acts when it comes to Israel is embarrassing. Honestly I get embarrassed as Jew by how Schumer, Lowey and Weiner act. They aren’t even reasonable it’s just knee-jerk stupidity.

MJ Rosengerg hits the nail on the head, as usual.

Our hypocrisy knows no bounds and this comes at a time when we are trying to convince the Arab world we honor their rights? The Arab world is imploding and this is where we are going to plant our feet in the sand? What message does this send to the Arab world?

The UN security council is a FINE venue for both Israel and the US when we want it to be- to call other nations on their unwillingness to step smartly to the dictates of international law, but if Israel violates international law, suddenly the only country that should be able to “review” it is the United States? How convenient!

I love how we are so quick to threaten the Palestinian Authority with concrete negative consequences if they don’t do what we want but do we do that with Israel? Of COURSE not. We just say “gee, those settlements are really unhelpful…” and when they keep building them we shrug our shoulders and say “gee, the Palestinians should just come to the negotiating table anyway…”

The standard US line is “oh, but it could jeopardize the peace process!” What peace process? The only thing it really would jeopardize is the very status quo that has enabled the occupation and settlement enterprise to continue unabated to the point where soon there will be no chance of a two state solution.

Here’s Israel going to the security council about rocket attacks from Gaza:

“President Obama threatened on Thursday night to take measures against the Palestinian Authority if it insists on going to the Security Council to condemn Israeli settlement activity, and demand that it be stopped,” a senior Palestinian official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Obama’s remarks came during an hour-long telephone conversation between the two late on Thursday, in which the US leader tried to dissuade Abbas from supporting a UN Security Council vote due to take place later on Friday.

During the call, Obama told Abbas: “There will be repercussions for Palestinian-American relations if you continue your attempts to go to the Security Council and ignore our requests in this matter, especially as we suggested other alternatives.”

How dare the stateless, occupied Palestinians turn to international law for a recourse for violations of their rights under international law! Only the US can do that!
