OT: The new effort to slime Julian Assange- claiming he’s antisemitic. Because you know, that will TOTALLY destroy him. The NYT runs with the story of course, despite it’s totally being uncorroborated.

The new McCarthyism- destroy someone’s credibility by claiming a) they are anti-Israel or b) antisemitic even if they are not. Look what has happened to J-Street, not even the Obama admin. would send a cabinet level official to the J-Street conference after Israel, the ADL and Congress labeled J-Street anti-Israel and disloyal.

It just shows how afraid people are of WikiLeaks. I’m not a big fan of the diplomatic cable document dump but I am a big believer in the importance of whistleblowing and long before the cables were published Wiki had done a lot of stuff exposing corporate and govt wrongdoing across the globe. I don’t know if the docudump is really whistleblowing because it was just a huge, across-the-board dump without much consideration of whether the info. shed light on actual wrongdoing.

Senator Obama once called whistleblowers “patriots” but now his justice dept. is going after journalists (and the leakers) who exposed the CIA (illegal) black site prisons during the Bush years- but isn’t that the very definition of whistleblowing? Here’s the problem- usually the only evidence whistleblowers can put forth to bolster their claims of govt (or corporate) wrongdoing is by taking documents and leaking them to the press even if it’s illegal to access said documents because they are classified or because the whistleblower has no right to them (even if they aren’t classified). So the question is how do people shed light on government or military wrongdoing if the govt is going to always go after them for unauthorized access to information? The only way to shed light on cover-ups is usually by whistleblowing.
