George Mitchell Resigns as Mideast Envoy

May 13, 2011

Unfortunately, it’s not a surprise. Mitchell resigns but Dennis Ross remains? Go figure. Who knows what would have been achieved had he been able to use all the diplomatic tools at his disposal?

Here is Secretary Clinton’s statement:

Statement by Secretary Clinton on the Resignation of Middle East Envoy George Mitchell

It has been an honor to work alongside Senator Mitchell over the past two years. He represents the best traditions of American diplomacy. Throughout George’s distinguished career he has taken on the hardest challenges with determination, talent and old fashioned Maine common sense. From the Senate to Northern Ireland to the State Department, his work has brought peace and increasing prosperity to millions of people around the world and made our own country stronger and more secure.

As well as anyone in his generation, George understands the slow, hard work of diplomacy, the art of compromise and the indispensable role of American leadership in the world. All of us at the State Department will miss his steady leadership and wise counsel, and we will carry forward his commitment to pursue a comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

Feb 25: Three Muslim men indicted for planning coordinated bombings in New York subways at rush hour. All three trained by Al Qaeda in Pakistan.

May 2nd: Osama bin Laden is dead.

May 12th: Two Muslim men arrested in New York on terrorism charges, accused of planning
to blow up synagogues. “Meanwhile, analysts scouring Osama Bin Laden’s personal diary said it’s clear the dead al Qaeda leader was committed to influencing others to attack America.”

May 14th: Pakistani-American man on trial in Chicago says he helped lay groundwork for 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, aided by the Pakistani ISI.

May 14th: Six men, including two South Florida imans and their sons, were indicted on federal charges of providing financial support to and encouraging violence by Pakistani Taliban, a group closely allied with Al Qaeda. All are
    American citizens born in Pakistan.

OK, I think I get it – Pakistanis are terrorists working closely with Al Qaeda, so we had every right to invade their sovereign country and take out OBL.

Today is the Palestinian commemoration of the Nakba and already 8 Palestinians have been shot by the IDF. Good coverage here at this Israeli blog:

Never Forget has more than one meaning. No one group has the sole rights to suffering and injustice. Israel should keep that in mind, as should some people in this country.

Also, on Friday, in protests against Israeli settlement expansion in the Silwan and Ras al-Amud neighborhoods of East Jerusalem Friday, Israeli police assaulted demonstrators with rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas, abducting 34 and shooting a 17-year old with live ammunition:

“The neighborhoods of Silwan and Ras al-Amud have become centers of non-violent protest in East Jerusalem in the last two years, after the Israeli Jerusalem municipality announced a plan to cleanse the neighborhoods of their existing Palestinian residents in order to build a biblical theme park and replace existing homes with Jewish-only housing developments.

To that end, hundreds of demolition orders have been issued by Israeli authorities to Palestinian homeowners in these neighborhoods, and dozens of homes have already been demolished by Israeli forces.”

I assume this means Palestinians who are ISRAELI CITIZENS.

The IDF suppressing peaceful protesters yesterday in Nabi Saleh:

Maybe Ethan Bronner should get off his backside and actually provide some real journalism of what goes on in the Territories.

I wish the State Dept. would say something about this.

This is truly disgusting — I mean, they’re not even throwing rocks; they’re chanting slogans for God’s sake.

That video is unbelievable! You know, every time there is violence our media always takes the position that the Palestinians deserve it because they were throwing stones. I don’t see any stones in that video. Also, even if there was, we (the US) didn’t really take issue with Egyptian protesters fighting back against the security forces, did we?

The State Department really needs to say something about what is going on at these Nakba day commemorations. Our media may be whitewashing it but the entire rest of the world is watching and it just reinforces how Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians is no longer justifiable. It’s like the US doesn’t even pretend to care about any of this but at the same time our govt runs around saying that we can be an honest broker in the region. Hello? How, exactly?

Sorry to be the wedding crasher Thain. But you know how it goes, maybe she just wanted to try something a little different in the virtual world. 😉 Heh.

Although the fact that your Red Sox just swept my Yankees — with me at the game and gloating in the third inning — could put a strain in the virtual relationship.

I’ll try to get past it.

Well, I guess beggars can’t be choosers, huh? So, I see you’re already over the wedding of William Wales? That didn’t take long. What kind of tattoos? They don’t say “mom” or anything, do they? 😉

No mate, nothing about mum. I’m a good Irish Republican and they are Celtic symbols. My family has a long history of opposing British occupation, at least until the Good Friday accords. When I was young and foolish I got an IRA tattoo b/c my older brothers and father and uncles had them.
