HOW DID HILLARY GET AWAY WITH WEARING WESTERN GARB WHEN BEING GREETED IN JEDDAH BY THE KING OF SAUDI ARABIA??? MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW LIVES THERE AND IS NOT ALLOWED TO GO SHOPPING WITHOUT COVERING HERSELF? ALL JOURNALISTS ARE COVERED….WHY NOT HILLARY???
My guess would be because she is a U.S. visiting government offical and not planning on taking up residence there. The only time I have seen Hillary wear any type of covering is when she visits a mosque.
Rachel, I think your explanation makes a lot of sense.
Rachels explanation is the most logical one.
I also have to say that in my opinion it is unexaptable that women have to cover themselves as it is clearly a violation of human rights.
NOT only that , also its because these officials pass and stay in the country WITHOUT passing by the costumes , the reasons is , they do NOT need a passport in an official government visit , does that make sense ?
It does not. They have two passports, a “normal” private one and one for official travel. It may be different for a SecState or President, but other gov officials have to go through the normal procedure, the only difference is their official passports and that they have an extra line for diplomats.
While not strictly speaking fair, I can see why official government visitors can bypass many of the travel headaches we all have to deal with. Think about trying to get all the gifts people give to visiting dignitaries through customs on an average day at a major airport, or if a high level official had their passport meddled with/pranked… ect. And rest assured that the “nearly-naked” body scan images of our world leaders and diplomats would be all over the internet by now. No, I can see why, logistically, they do things as they do. Besides, when a plane shows up with a big state seal on the side of it, I think you know who’s riding in it.
As far as the clothing thing, “western garb” is considered to be part of the cultural identity of our nation as well as many others. Government officials, generally, are not compelled to blend into the population as journalists and others are. While they may slightly modify their usual style – a more conservative blouse, long sleeves, ect… – they are meant to stand as a representative of their country. The exception to this rule is usually religious sites as a sign of respect. Madame Secretary is already quite conservative with regard to her choice of clothing, so no adjustments are called for in her case.
An addendum – Lisa is correct. Diplomats do carry identification as more of a “just in case” type of a thing and they do have all sorts of protocol regarding entering other countries, but it’s a much smoother process than that of the populous at large.
HOW DID HILLARY GET AWAY WITH WEARING WESTERN GARB WHEN BEING GREETED IN JEDDAH BY THE KING OF SAUDI ARABIA??? MY SISTER LIVING FROM A PRETTY LONG TIME AND IS NOT ALLOWED TO GO OUT WITHOUT HIJAAB ……..
