Good news, it’s also streaming live on CNN and people are writing me telling me it’s live on MSNBC. YES!

Liveblogging:
Starting with her comments on Iran

Secretary Clinton on Iran:
~After Iranian elections, treatment of protesters, journalists “deplorable”
~Administration has no illusions about potential to work with Iran although ignoring the Islamic Republic has not worked either
~Admin. has put forth OFFER to engage with Iran but the offer is not indefinite, it is time-limited (no timetable given by Secretary Clinton)
~US has given Iran a CHOICE- they can be responsible members of the int’l community and engage with international community and come sit at the table with them/us or they can choose to continue to isolate themselves by not doing so
~Civil nuclear power OK, but not nuclear weapons
~We will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons
~If Iran wants to be a constructive actor in the area it must stop supporting terrorism and stop threatening it’s neighbors

On Afghanistan:
~ we need international support
~more troops sent to help stabilize the area
~ we must deal constructively with a stable, economically viable Pakistan
~Taliban and AQ not interchangeable- not all members of AQ support Taliban and vice versa
~she compliments Pakistan for their efforts to decrease terrorist influence in the area

The US must
~acknowledge past US mistakes and be willing to change- these are strategic assets, not signs of weakness
~admit US role in drug trafficking in Mexico
~closing GITMO important

Nonproliferation
~US must take lead but international community must work with us

Environment
~clean energy future, decrease green house gasses
~global warming

~international community must join together as it impacts us all, US can not do it alone

Economy
~not usually the purview of SOS but economics/development/security all tie in together and she will be involved where appropriate

We must attack the urgent, important and long-term all at once. We cannot be passive observers.
IRAN-USA/CLINGON

Main part of speech is over, Q&A beginning- I am not going to highlight that since it’s being covered on so many channels/news websites, which is FANTASTIC. The speech, as always, was outstanding.

UPDATE: I Just saw this little article over on CNN- I usually like Jill Dougherty but given she threw an update to this article up only two hours ago (according to the time-stamp on it), it begs the question- why would she put up yet another regurgitation of the “Hillary Clinton has no power, no visibility as SOS” at 12:30pm when as CNN’s foreign affairs correspondent covering the SOS, she would/should be sitting in the audience at hte Council for Foreign Relations, waiting for Hillary’s speech to begin in just thirty minutes?

I’m clearly biased, but it was a great speech.

I agree great speech. Command of the issues and plans.

A little ticked off turned to c-span and they were covering some NJ congressman talking about nuclear stuff instead of the sos talking about the same thing.

LIB (Karen)- I am biased too, but I’m not sure how anyone can really say it wasn’t a great speech- just enough detail to give people something concrete to grasp but not so detailed that people’s head spin!

I think it accomplished the goal of outlining her foreign policy/diplomatic agenda for not only an international audience, but also, importantly, the domestic one.

It was on television. After I saw that I went to c-span.org to see the speech. I thought they would carry it live since she is sos.

I am at the office, but I did get to hear most of it and watch some of it. She is always a wonderful speaker (like the rest of her/my sisters here, I am biased – but she is always very clear and organized). I thought she did an excellent job – I love the way she reasons with her audience.

She also has a charming presence, adorable demeanor – so friendly, open, and sweet – and a lovely speaking voice. Very pleasant on the eyes, ears, and mind.

There is only one way we could be luckier. Y’all know what THAT is!

    Go Hillary! Great job!

If anyone can criticise this administration as not being tough enough they need only look to Hillary as an example of how tough it can be. To me she weaves strength back into the warp of the Obama foreign policy. She insists that our partners work with us, become engaged in solutions for their parts of the world and share responsibility for their contibution to global problems. This is truly a time to use “communities of nations” first to solve problems with more an more nations becoming involved and using their spheres of influence. India is an example of this.

This speech should go over well with republicans and other critics. SOS Clinton is clearly not going to be rolled over. Nor will she sit patiently by and be ignored. Some may see it as an effort to grab back more power that has been dithered away to the Defense and Treasury departments but she frames the issues very well when she says development programs dovetail into defense objectives and economic and trade policies help frame diplomacy.

It will be interesting in the next few years to see how she changes and strengthens the State Department and USAID to fit into her larger vision of foreign policy.

I am currently trying to find the video in a format I can embed on my site in this post- cspan doesn’t allow it or if they do, I lack the techie skills to do it (but I think they copywrite protect it and prevent embedding). As soon as I find the video I will get it up, asap, promise!

Ignore CNN, they only care about covering MJ and his former doctors. I stopped watching them when the pig alex constello(sp?) called hillary the b-word last year.

    Hillary was wonderful.

Trevor- I’m not a fan of the Bilderberger, or any secret society, but according to this list (not sure how recent), she’s not even a formal member/participant (but it doesn’t list any of the Bushes and that makes me wonder):
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bilderberg_participants

And if she was, well, is there evidence that she’s pushing an agenda other than Obama and her own? No.

truth911- this will be the one and only time I respond to you- the only reason I am not going to delete your trollish comment is because a) I don’t believe in censorship and b) it’s important for people to see that the type of ignorance you display, is still lurking out there.

Also, I have never formally articulated a comment policy because quite frankly, I’ve never had the need, so here it is:

      – people who troll on this site will be ignored.

Hillary is just another puppet of the New World Order. Another puppet pushing their agenda. She keeps talking about “democracy”. Most US citizens don’t realize that the US is not a democracy, it’s a REPUBLIC. In a democracy, majority wins. The word “democracy” is not found once in the Constitution. Please watch “The Obama Deception” and “End Game” by Alex Jones, they are free on on internet.

Totaly agree. Democracy is also known as mob-rule.
All she is doing is supporting the CFR (who the Clintons have sold out to) and their WICKED plans for World-Government?

Who CARES if it was a “great speech” or not.
Do you know what they are doing to our country?

      • July 20, 2009 1:53 pm

Ummm…CFR obviously is a good way for her to reach a wide foreign policy audience immediately, which I believe was part of the goal
