SOS Hillary Clinton at the Women in the World in NY: Videos, Photos, Commentary

March 14, 2010

Tina Brown of the Daily Beast hosted the Women in the World Summit which included big names like Meryl Streep, Hillary Clinton, Queen Rania of Jordan and others. But the main point of the evening was to give voice to the women who are working day in and day out in their communities to better the lives of women:

Yesterday marked the start of the first Women in the World summit, held at the Hudson Theatre in Manhattan’s midtown this weekend. It began with an introduction by Brown, who asked us to contemplate a group that included;

“Liberian powerhouse Leymah Gbowee, who led the 2003 sex strike to end her country’s civil war, and Kiran Bedi—the first female cop in India—who subdued the once-notorious Tihar Jail in Delhi. And then mix them in with news dynamos like ABC’s Diane Sawyer and Half the Sky co-author and former New York Times reporter Sheryl WuDunn, who will rub shoulders with big-time pragmatists like Bank of America’s Sallie Krawcheck and provocative Zambian economist Dambisa Moyo, a withering critic of wasted foreign aid…”

Last night, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, introduced a reading of the play, SEVEN, directed by Julie Taymor and performed by Meryl Streep. “It’s not just that women’s rights are human rights, but women’s progress is human progress,” said Clinton.

Brown and her team at The Daily Beast have been working on this event for the last six months. “Empowering women is the key to peace, prosperity, and progress, not just here in the United States, but also in countries where women have endured repression for centuries,” says Brown…

I’ll admit, I have been pretty hard on Tina Brown on this blog after her article about Hillary Clinton wearing a Burqa and having no voice in this administration, which I felt was demeaning and sexist towards HRC, but there is no denying this was a great event for a great cause.

Here are videos of Secretary Clinton at the event:
