Rant alert:

One of the things that fascinates me is how Obama and his advisers (Rahm, Jarrett, Gibbs, etc.) are so annoyed with the very progressives he put him into office(remember, Rahm called progressive groups “retards” for opposing the administration’s concessions on health reform?). Never mind the fact that many progressives are simply trying to point out that on a whole host of issues Obama has done the exact opposite of what he campaigned on. To hear the Washington DC chattering class tell it, progressives just pulled this stuff out of their arse and are trying to change his agenda in some radical way and thus the criticisms are somehow unfair or invalid. Hello? It would be one thing if Obama hadn’t painted himself as being opposed to GWB’s crackdown on whistleblowers, illegal warrantless wiretapping, indefinite detentions, keeping GITMO open, war, war and more war. But he DID paint himself as being opposed to all those things.

And for the seasoned polls who look at us progressives and shake their heads and condescendingly cluck “tsk, tsk, you just don’t understand the reality of governing…we grownups have to be pragmatic, we don’t have the luxury of entertaining your fuzzy wuzzy liberal politics…” or something to that effect- then don’t LIE when you run for office. I think we can all appreciate that sometimes circumstances change and yes, there are times when bipartisanship is important, as is making compromises. Unfortunately, Obama has been the one to compromise and received nothing in return- not from the GOP, not from Bibi Netanyahu, not from the Chinese and not from Wall Street.

I do not know why we must be expected to continually discredit the evidence of our eyes, ears, and minds and keep agreeing that Obama is the most wonderful thing that has happened to us.

And did you see he restarted the Bush-era Talon spy program? It had been stopped under Rumsfeld because they had been spying on anti-war activists and political critics. Unbelievable.

It took me a loooooong time, after 2008, to give Obama my grudging respect, and he makes it mighty tempting to hate him all over again. It’s just that — until 2012 at least — the alternatives look even worse.
