About The Author

Welcome!

A bit about me- I am an all-around political junkie with a particular interest in foreign policy and health policy and I have been blogging off and on about politics for almost 8 years on different websites.  I have published articles about various topics including nursing education, health care reform and feminism. I have a law degree, a nursing degree and I have practiced health, insurance and disability law in both federal and state court. Prior to getting my law degree I worked as nurse in both acute medical and psychiatric settings and I have taught psychiatric nursing as an adjunct professor. I currently work at a large publishing company in Massachusetts.

Naturally, I am a fan of our current Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and believe that she can rehabilitate the image of the United States and help to create a new vision of foreign policy and development in the post-9/11 world. While Hillary Clinton unfortunately did not get the democratic nomination in 2008, if she were to consider running for President again in the future, she could count me among her supporters.

UPDATE: This a private blog dedicated to Hillary Clinton and her agenda as Secretary of State. I say “private blog” because while I thought that was obvious, I am getting increasingly more emails from people thinking I am the Secretary of State, asking me to help them obtain passports, special travel privileges, looking for job opportunities at the State Department and every once in a while I get emails from people tipping me off to where Osama Bin Laden might be hiding.  For the record, I respond to every single one of those emails and re-direct them to the State Department and I clarify that this is a private blog which has NO OFFICIAL connection to the Secretary of State.

Wow, nurse AND lawyer? You must like going to school!

As a professor of English I tend to notice and appreciate good writing when I come across it in the blogosphere and you definitely are an excellent writer and perhaps now I know why- my wife, who is a lawyer, told me once that in law school they made very clear that if you couldn’t express yourself well in writing, law school (and eventually actual lawyering) would really be a struggle.

I read your blog daily, as much for foreign policy info. as for Hillary news and I appreciate not only your attention to every little detail about what the Secretary is doing, but also your analysis of some of the background issues.

‘I believe that speaking truth to power is the only way we can get things accomplished for We The People.’

And does the power (elected and appointed officials) also have to speak truthfully to the people? and if so have you noticed a time or two when MRS Clinton did not speak the truth, or did she misspeak, or disremember, or was she sleep deprived or what ever synonyms are used to forgive this most blatant of liars who appears to not only lie to us but to herself.’

‘Naturally, I am a fan of our current Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and believe that she can rehabilitate the image of the United States- ‘

I don’t get the ‘naturally….’ What has MRS Clinton ever done to rehabilitate anything but her own or her husband’s images and did she do so by telling the truth.

Oh, I have a doctorate in clinical psych (yet started my career as an art teacher) and many of my colleagues and I believe that MRS Clinton is a personality disordered individual who suffers (but not as much as the people in NY have during her do little but run for the POTUS reign in the senate) from at least 3 for 4 disorders or have you never noticed her grandiosity, histrionics and entitlement? Were you ever a psych nurse?

And before I am dismissed as a Hillary hater let me say that I and many other liberals don’t hate her; I actually admire how far she has come on so little but her connections. However, Bill Clinton is the brilliant one, his wife is merely well educated and by your conflicting statements and careers (lying and caring?) you are proving that a surfeit of education is clearly not enough.

Wow, Rebecca-you were able to reach all those conclusions simply by reading my short blurb about myself and why I started this blog? That’s pretty amazing.

I have absolutely no problem with people having differing political viewpoints and supporting different candidates for office, but you definitely seem to, given your judgmental, angry tone. You seem to assume that I will simply dismiss you as a Hillary-hater, but actually, I really try never to dismiss *anyone*- I believe in respectful debate.

I’ll address some of the things you raise in your comment, although I will try to not be as dismissive as you were, nor will I attack you personally and I will try not to make assumptions/generalizations about you as a person since *I don’t KNOW you*- despite the fact that in your last sentence, you do all of the above.

In my blurb above about the website, I say, “Naturally, I am a fan of our current Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton…” and when I say “naturally” I am referring to the fact that it should be pretty obvious based on the name of the blog, that I happen to be a supporter of Hillary Clinton.

It’s interesting you repeatedly refer to her as “MRS Clinton” as though trying to disparage her- are you trying to reinforce your [apparent] belief that she essentially has not earned her right to be a public official, given your statement about “how far she has come on so little but her connections. However, Bill Clinton is the brilliant one, his wife is merely well educated…” I bet I can find at least 18 million people who disagree with you given we/they voted for her- in my book, getting 18 million+ votes is “earning” something.

I have to say, your last sentence is my favorite- you say, “However, Bill Clinton is the brilliant one, his wife is merely well educated and by your conflicting statements and careers (lying and caring?) you are proving that a surfeit of education is clearly not enough.”

Again, wow. You must have some inside knowledge of Hillary and Bill to be able to conclude that one is more brilliant than the other. Whether one or the other is per se “brilliant” is pretty subjective.

What conflicting statements did I make? Just because you disagree with me does not mean they are in conflict. Also, your comment about my “conflicting” careers- are you referring to nursing and law? They aren’t conflicting- there are all kinds of nurses who practice in different areas of law (for ex: health law, disability law, criminal law). And are you really so shallow as to generalize the entire field of law as “lying” and nursing as “caring”? Because that is how I read that. Correct me if I am wrong, but you don’t know anything about me, my fields of practice/study or my views on anything other than what is on this blog, yet amazingly, you are able to summarily conclude not only that my careers are at conflict with each other, but that I have PROVEN that having education “is clearly not enough.”

When somebody reaches conclusions based largely on stereotypes and assumptions, w/o acknowledging that they really don’t have all [or ANY] of the info. needed to reach [let alone prove] the conclusion, it’s hard to take it seriously.

I still don’t get the “naturally”
when you produce the 18 million people who voted for her check out if they voted for her because she is a woman, and those who would never vote for a black man; hardly a testimony to her competence.

brilliant is subjective, gee, I wonder what that does to the wexlers?
and I am the one that said education is not enough.

I can see why you choose to open your ownblog where you will get no debate honest or not. good by and good luck in your next career(s). and you may have the last word as I will never sign on to this blog again.

  14. August 15, 2009 3:54 pm

    Rebecca-

I’m all for debate, but you haven’t put forth anything but subtle insults. There’s nothing you have said that gives me the impression you are interested in respectful debate and if you don’t understand what I mean, go back and read your two comments to me.

I responded at length to your original comment from weeks and weeks ago and you could have responded back to mine, but you largely chose not to other than to continue to focus on the personal (my “careers”- not sure why you still focus on that) and an unsubstantiated reference to 18 million Hillary voters essentially voting for her because they/we are all racist which is such an insulting, angry, sweeping generalization that I really don’t know how I should respond other than to say I don’t think you were even looking for a rational response.

If you choose not to come back, I respect that, but that sounds a lot like “I don’t like real debate, so I’ll take my ball and go home.”

Stacy, I really enjoy it when you stretch your muscles and add your commentary to these news stories you reference and extract. I encourage you to do more of it. I really enjoy your writing, this blog and the video sources and photos you put in front of us as well as the numerous press pieces you chase down. Hi Stacy,

We’ve exchanged comments on FP’s Madame Secretary, but I didn’t notice the link to your own blog until today. I’ve added you to my Favorites!
And I second SteveR above — you write wonderfully well.

I particularly admired your temperate responses to Rebecca’s sweeping vitriol. Reading her post, I was transported back to the primary season, when the shrillosphere was abuzz with an endless stream of scintillating rumors, exaggerations, misrepresentations, or outright lies about Hillary that were repeated often enough until they became accepted truth.

    “Racist,” “disingenuous,” “divisive,” “untruthful,”“dishonest,”
“polarizing,” “saying whatever it takes to win,” “attempting to deceive the American people” — and these were just the quotes cming from the Obama campaign! Do you remember her “deliberate racist taunt” about Martin Luther King (Obama campaign, again)? Her infamous 60 Minutes interview with Steve Croft in which she cleverly tried to stoke rumors that Obama was a closet Muslim? (I read the entire transcript and counted eight separate times in which she either plainly denied the false claim that Obama was Muslim, labeled that suggestion to be a smear, or expressed sympathy for Obama having to deal with the Muslim innuendo, but never mind). Remember that story, circulated around the blogosphere, that “Hillary was fired from her job with the House Judiciary Committee for lying and ethical misconduct”? It became established fact, virtually impossible to dislodge, although utterly untrue. How could we forget her naked threats to have Obama assasinated? And on and on…

This was one reason among many that I wanted to see Hillary’s name put in nomination in Denver — so that the lasting impression of her would be fair, balanced, and accurate. Fortunately, between her own gracious speech at the convention and her exemplary performance as SOS, she has rehabilitated her image all by herself (at least in the eyes of all but a few remaining detractors like you, Rebecca) and is currently enjoying better ratings than her boss.

Rebecaa, one of the most oft-quoted sexist tropes of the primary season was that this brilliant woman with a long and distinguished career in public service was an unqualified pretender riding her husband’s coattails. She was not a two-term U.S. Senator with many accomplishments in her own right but the “junior member of Billary,” (as suggested by Andrew Stephen of New Statesman). Never was this more glaringly evident than after her unexpected win in New Hampshire, when Chris Matthews told us bluntly, “The reason she’s a U.S. senator, the reason she’s a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around. That’s how she got to be senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn’t win there on her merit.” [This was the same Chris Matthews who told us after Iowa that Hillary’s nomination had gone from inevitable to improbable overnight].

Like it or not, Rebecca, Secretary Clinton is a widely respected and admired woman (#36 in the world, on Forbes just published list!)who fought an historic campaign, was supported by 18 million voters, and came within a hair’s breadth of being the Democratic nominee. All of that deserves more recognition and celebration than comments like yours suggest.

As for your assertion that “MRS Clinton is a personality disordered individual who suffers from at least 3 for 4 disorders or have you never noticed her grandiosity, histrionics and entitlement? Were you ever a psych nurse?” — I can only respond that I have been a psychiatrist for nearly 30 years, and know enough not to throw around wildly speculative diagnoses about a woman I don’t know and have never met, based exclusively on what I’ve read in the shrillosphere or heard from the likes of Chris Matthews — unless of course, you have a closer acquaintance with Secretary Clinton, in which case I am all ears.

    • August 21, 2009 9:17 am

Carolyn- First of all, I’m glad to see you over here- I check in to see what’s up on the site, Madame Secretary, daily (I love foreignpolicy.com in general) and have seen your comments over there and I think at a few other websites.

You actually were brought up on this blog the other day in the comment section of one of the posts here in reference to an anti-Hillary article (I can’t remember which one)–you had apparently commented (a rebuttal to the article) over at the article’s website and Terry, who frequents here (see above) told me to go over and read your comment and Terry actually said “how do we get Carolyn Rodham over here to take part in the discussion?” And here you are!

Second, with respect to Rebecca’s ad hominem attacks/comments above- I love the fact that you are actually a psychiatrist- do you think now would be a good time to tell Rebecca that I actually *was* a psych nurse? Heh.

And I’ll be honest, when I read her original comment way back when, the psych nurse in me thought, “what real practitioner of psychiatry or psychology throws around DSM diagnoses like that in reference to someone they don’t know, never met, etc?”

I have no issue with people coming here and disagreeing with me- to the contrary, I actually enjoy a good debate- the operative words being “good debate”- people who just want to spam the site with hateful monologues or who don’t have the strength of their convictions enough to even support their views/rants with some sort of *argument*, well, that’s not really debate.

Again, glad to see you here and I know others are as well 😉

But instead we have Hussein Obama, the apologist-in-chief.

@ Rebecca – I find it amazing at how so many people believe the press and their reporting – the Bosnia comment was something that Hillary should NOT have backed down on… First and formost she was speaking figuratively – the facts were she was the first first lady to enter a WAR ZONE and while no while there weren’t grenades going off at her feet – the trip was VERY DANGEROUS and Hillary was keeping a promise to the troops… I HAVE YET TO SEE ANOTHER FIRST LADY enter a war zone that EVEN THE PRESIDENT COULDN’T ENTER…

Too often political/policy-based blogs have a set group of commentators who can get a bit rude when someone posts something that they either don’t agree with or which isn’t up to the intellectual standard they like to assume they uphold. It isn’t like that here and, as someone who is not always the most politically astute poster, I’d like to thank you for not dismissing those less informed posts.

I want to say that for victory in War on Terror we should deal through ideology also. And that ideology is of Hindu Islam which pre-dates Arab Islam.Whole AfPak region is OLD INDIA and Hindu Islam is the KEY to defeat Arab Islam born terrorism and late Osama’s call for global Jihad.Hindu Islam is that old indigenous stream of religion and culture which still flows underground in the region.Medieval anti-Indian Arab/Muslim Imperialism, constant invasions over India from the North-West(the region where this war is going on), made this part of OLD INDIA Islamic, like Iran which became 100% Muslim. But rest of India fought bitterly and did not become Muslim.Inspite of political/military collapse and centuries of Muslim rule by tyrants, Hindu India survived. India is the only country in the world where Muslim rule for such a long period could not Islamise a whole people and their age-old culture and religion remained alive. The very meaning of this word HINDU is RESISTANCE.One who refuces to embrace Arab Islam even at the threat of beheading.lacs of Hindus were butchered by Muslim tyrants but they did not accept Arab Islam. This is the glory and internal strength of India. I have coined the word Hindu Islam which means the pre-Arab Islam indigenous stream of Hindu religion and traditions of India.I have pointedly used the HINDU word because it denotes struggle against Medieval Arab/Muslim Imperialism.Unfortunately, Pakistan identifies itself with Arab Islam, while it is part of the world of Hindu Islam.AfPak is the birth-place of Hindu Islam.Pakistan should, like her one-time sister-nation, Bangladesh (which was earlier East Pakistan),change its name and become “Muslim India” or “Islamic Republic of India”.The word Pakistan is an absurdity and boosts terrorism.Pakistan should be asked to change its name. Our best wishes are with you. We wish you complete victory in this great war, which we Indians, are fighting since the very birth of Arab Islam. Our best wishes to Mrs Clinton, Secretary of State, who is doing a great job indeed.Thanks.

I have grown up listening to the many great things about America from my friends and family who lived there and very much want to go there. I am a quick learner and a hard working student who always tries to do better in class. Unfortunately my parents do not possess the adequate financial resources to be able to make my dream come true.
I learned about you from my grandfather, who works in America, and watching you talk to people in Bangladesh was very nice and this is why I am writing to you. The current school that I am attending, Turkish Hope International School, is good but it is not helping me learn the things that I want to learn.

I have only two months left before moving to Grade 6 and I was wondering if you could help me go to America to study and also take my family with me. Since you are very nice I wish that you would help my dreams come true.

Thank you very much for reading this.

    Sincerely,

Hilary is not great. She is hypocritical on matters concerning Israel and Palestine, for one example. Her State Dept. recently denied assistance to an American citizen in Tel Aviv because she (Sandra Tamari) is not Jewish! Can you believe this? Blatant discrimination by Hilary’s own department. I think its time to call Hilary to task for neglecting her duty to American citizens. America does not discriminate: Israel discriminates (big time!), but not America. Or are the two interchangeable? Is that what is so “special?”

    Dear Secretary Clinton,
America has never had a more intelligent, talented person as you.
Although an Obama fan I must admit I campaigned for you as long as it was possible to do so. The World needs people with your charisma, and understanding and resolve to keep our country great.
Please stay on as Secretary of State, no one else could come close to the dignity and class you have always displayed.
I don’t know what else we can do to persuade you to stay, but I pray you reconsider.
Our country needs you now, and besides that it would provide an easier transition when you are elected President in 2016.
Thank you for representing us as the best America has to offer to the rest of this weary world so lacking in role models for positive humanity.
Thank you again for your impeccable tour of duty.
    with great respect and loyalty,
    Budd McLean

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet
effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appeal. I must say that you’ve done a fantastic job with this.
Additionally, the blog loads super fast for me on Firefox.
    Outstanding Blog!

Could that also function with your psychic feeling? Study the picture, element by component, and then in its entirety.

The cards and their positions might not seem to link.
